The grant was awarded to William Harris Elementary School on behalf of the Northeast Community Fund, a non-profit organization that helps the homeless population in the Decatur area. Taylor LaFrence, a 3rd grade teacher (pictured above, middle), challenged her students to research the needs of local community organizations in order to best assist them. Once all student presentations were heard, the student body voted to select one organization to partner with for this year’s community impact project. Students then paired their writers workshop model and social studies unit to create and publish persuasive iMovies soliciting for donations from the community. Watch the video below.
