IEA honors Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky with Friend of Education award

ROSEMONT – Today U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL9) was honored with the Illinois Education Association’s (IEA) Friend of Education award for her commitment to public education.

“Rep. Schakowsky is not just an advocate for public schools, she’s also a union supporter,” said IEA President Kathi Griffin. “She recognizes public education is strong when our educators have a strong unified voice, and she’s taken that fight for public education and unions to Washington.”

“It is such an honor to receive this award from my friends at the IEA. As a former educator myself, I understand just how important education is for everyone, from Pre-K to retirees seeking education on new things,” said Schakowsky. “I will continue advocating for educators, and for our students, in Washington. We have a lot of work left ahead of us, but together we can get things done.”

Schakowsky was nominated for the award by IEA member Nanette Ross-Meredith who is an educator in Glenview.
