Across our state, families are facing growing food insecurity as Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits dwindle due to the government shut down and the cost of living continues to rise. Illinois receives $4.4 billion through SNAP to feed nearly 2 million students, families and Illinoisans. We cannot let anyone go hungry because of federal politics. Food insecurity is a national crisis.
Many of our students will come to school hungry. We know no child can learn on an empty stomach. We also know some of our IEA family will be facing similar hardships, as many will struggle to put food on their own family’s table. If you or someone you know is need of food, find resources here.
As educators and union leaders, you have always stepped up when your community needed you most. Today, we’re asking you to do so again. Political gridlock should not starve your students nor your community.
That’s why the IEA is launching a statewide food drive to ensure no student goes hungry this winter, and we need your help.
We’re calling on your local and asking you to partner with a local food bank or community organization that addresses hunger and food insecurity. If you need help finding an organization click here. Your local can make an immediate, tangible difference for the families and students who need you.
Here’s how your local can take part:
- Sign up to get involved: fill out this form and pledge your support.
- Identify a partner organization: connect with a local food bank, pantry or community group.
- Organize a food drive or donate funds at your school or community food centers.
- Share your efforts: share photos and updates on social media so we can highlight your local’s work statewide and inspire others to join in. Use the hashtag #IEAfeedsIllinois and #IEAUnitedWeWin
Your students, your families and your members are counting on YOU!
Let’s show them your union family stands with them!
We know we are stronger united and united we win!
Please let us know your local’s plans by 5 p.m., Tues., Nov. 4, so we can coordinate and amplify everyone’s efforts. We are also looking to hear from members who are helping fight hunger in their own way. Please share this link with them.
Together in solidarity and united in service,
Karl Goeke
IEA president
