The IEA-NEA ESP EMERGING LEADERS ACADEMY (ESP-ELA) is a partnership between the Illinois Education Association (IEA) and the National Education Association (NEA) to provide a state based ESP Leadership Institute (formerly ESP Leaders for Tomorrow) for IEA ESP members. The ESP-ELA is designed to provide leadership training and support for IEA’s emerging ESP leaders.

What is IEA-NEA ESP Emerging Leaders Academy (ESP-ELA)?
The ESP-ELA is a six-session leadership training held over a period of seven months. This training is available to all dues paying IEA ESP members in good standing who meet the program’s eligibility requirements.
- Must be a current IEA-NEA member in good standing.
- Must commit to participating in all six training sessions as well as the related homework assignments and capstone project.
- Must believe in the importance of collective action and the right of employees to organize and participate in unions
- Must commit to utilize skills learned within the Illinois Education Association.
- Must be open to new and challenging experiences.
Why an Emerging Leaders Academy?
IEA-NEA ESP Emerging Leaders Academy trains current and future leaders on the leadership attitudes, skills, and knowledge needed to enhance your ability to be a visible and vocal advocate at the local, region, state, and national levels.
What will I learn and what kind of time commitment and resources does IEA-NEA ESP Emerging Leaders Academy require?
The program is broken into six sessions which includes a Capstone project.
All participants are fully funded for the following expenses: Airfare, lodging in Orlando, Florida (based on double occupancy), Lodging at the Summer Leadership Academy and at the Capstone project location. Breakfast and lunch, some dinners, substitute pay or salary reimbursement, and Registration fee for the NEA Leadership Summit are also fully funded.
Accepted candidates are expected to work with their Region chair and Local President to fund uncovered expenses such as lodging at the one conference, dinners, transportation, mileage reimbursements and baggage fees.
What happens if I cannot attend all four sessions?
We understand that personal and professional emergencies can arise, however, it is expected that selected candidates will attend all sessions completely except in cases of an emergency. If an emergency arises, IEA-NEA ESP Emerging Leaders Academy participants commit to notifying the ESP-ELA program as soon as possible. Participants who leave the program prior to completion for non-emergency reasons may incur a fee.
