Legislative Update 5/7/2018
This week, both chambers are scheduled to be in session Tuesday through Friday. Last week, the Senate was the only chamber in session. It was an opportunity for the Senate to get caught up and move bills through the process in preparation for the last month of session. Any action that was taken on our IEA initiatives is reported on below.
We would like to draw your attention to a proposal that will be in a House committee this week. SJRCA 4, a proposal in support of the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to the United States Constitution.
A hearing will be held at the Bilandic Building in Chicago TODAY at 10 a.m.
Committee action bills
HB 751 (Davidsmeyer, R-Jacksonville/Holmes, D-Aurora) amends the Pension Code to change the definition of “eligible employment” for the purpose of allowing a teacher to return to teaching in subject shortage areas without impairing his or her retirement status or retirement annuity, through June 30, 2019. IEA supports this initiative,which passed the Illinois House and the Senate Licensed Activities and Pensions committee unanimously and currently sits on second reading in the Illinois Senate.
HB 3080 (Ries, R-Olney/Manar, D-Bunker Hill) allows, through June 30, 2019, a retired teacher to return to employment, without impairing retirement status, up to 120 paid days or 600 paid hours. IEA supports this initiative, which passed the Illinois House on a vote of 104-0 and is currently assigned to the Senate Licensed Activities and Pensions committee unanimously and currently sits on second reading in the Illinois Senate.
