Statement from Illinois Education Association President, Cinda Klickna

July 6, 2017
“By approving a budget and the income tax rate to fund the spending plan, state government can assure Illinoisans that schools statewide will receive the funding they need to open their doors. In addition, the state will be able to start paying off the huge backlog of unpaid bills.
We know this was a very difficult vote for every lawmaker, but we also know that for schools to open, for higher education to be funded, for the neediest of our students and their families to get what they need, our state needs more revenue,” said IEA President Cinda Klickna.

We encourage the governor to work with the legislators from both sides of the aisle to ensure that our schools open on time.
We want to say ‘thank you’ to all the House members who showed courage by voting to override the governor’s veto. Regardless of party and politics, these lawmakers showed their support for students, public schools and Illinois families statewide.

With today’s override of Gov. Rauner’s veto, the Illinois House of Representatives has incrementally moved Illinois toward better fiscal health and, therefore, a brighter future after two embarassing years without a state budget.”
