The following statement is from Cinda Klickna, president of the 130,000 member Illinois Education Association.

It was good to hear Governor Rauner wishes to fund education categoricals. Our districts must be able to continue to provide crucial services to students, such as special education and transportation.

Unfortunately, that’s virtually the only good news from the budget address. The governor’s proposal lacks adequate revenue, so he has failed, again, to do his duty and present a balanced budget.

Governor Rauner was elected on a promise to fix what was broken in Illinois. More than two years after his election, the state’s budget situation has significantly worsened.

It is now 2017 and the governor continues holding the budget hostage, withholding a real spending plan until he gets legislative approval for non-budgetary items from his own agenda.

By shirking his constitutional duty to present a balanced budget, the governor is like a student who, when assigned a term paper, responds by presenting a list of demands that must be met before he’ll complete the assignment.

This is unacceptable. The people of Illinois want the governor to do his job. Bruce Rauner was elected governor to solve problems. Over the past two years, he has only made things worse.
