Pension forums scheduled statewide

An organization that has targeted public employee pensions in Illinois is sponsoring a series of public forums throughout Illinois over the next month.

The first of what the Illinois Policy Institute calls “Local Pension Accountability Forums” was held Monday night in Springfield.

The events are focused on the proposal to shift the state’s cost for public employee pensions to local school districts. IEA President Cinda Klickna participated in the panel discussion that took place before an audience that included many retirees who are counting on their TRS or SURS pensions.

Watch a brief video of highlights from the event.

The next IPI-sponsored pension event is Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Morris library on the SIU Carbondale campus. Here is the schedule for the rest of the events, for which some venues have yet to be announced:

  • Quincy – July 23, 7 p.m. – Orr Auditorium – John Wood Community College
  • Lemont – Aug. 2
  • Decatur – Aug. 6
  • Cary – Aug. 14
  • Rockford – Aug. 16

The print edition of the IEA Advocate will be arriving in your mailbox soon. Look for pension news, school success stories, IEA RA highlights and more.

Here is just one story to look forward to:

For five generations, there have been teachers in this family. Is it genetic? Or, is it due to the environment they’ve grown up in? Even they’re not 100 percent sure, but they do know one thing: It definitely runs in the family.

You are invited to the IEA Summer Leadership Academy 2012, featuring a keynote address by Chris Gardner, author of the New York Times #1 bestseller The Pursuit of Happyness.

The theme for the 2012 SLA is “Power Through Unity.” Participants will come away with new tools, new connections and new ideas to effectively harness and strategically unleash the power that 130,000 members can generate to maintain and build strong schools, strong communities and a strong economy.
